GSL 1st Bartons
My lasting memory of Walton Firs is waking up very early on the morning of 1st July 1978 and gazing at the morning mist floating up from the dew laden campsite. I was the only one up at the time and I remembered it was a special day. I was now 9 years old and on my first cub camp. I had only joined 1st Hersham Pack B a few weeks before and now I was about to get a real taste of the "adventure" that my friends had been talking about when they first introduced me to the idea of scouting.
Walton Firs played a big part in 1st Hersham's scouting activities, seeing as they were based just down the road. As scout leader of Troop B, I often visited for wide games, camps, cooking competitions and even fun runs. Also both sons of the camp warden were active members of the troop.
28 years after that ninth birthday and I'm still involved in scouting. Now based in North Oxfordshire as GSL of a small village scout group, I still go camping and I still like to be the first one up in the morning so that I can have a quiet moment to remember that morning of my first camping experience at Walton Firs. I hope that one day I will return.
