ExperiencesWhen I first visited Walton Firs it was a golf course to this day some of the bunkers can be seen, often used as patrol kitchen sites. During the war, as a member of 1st Hersham we would go swimming in Manor pond with the soldiers who were camped there. As a patrol we would camp at Walton Firs pulling our trek cart from Hersham, entering the site by a lane where the commando course now is. We camped, cooked, played wide games, breaking camp Sunday afternoon to pull the trek cart home. It was a tough week end but we learned a lot about one another and how to work as a patrol. Our patrol camped on the third weekend throughout the camping season. Later when I became Scoutmaster, GroupScoutmaster and District Commissioner we found ourselves most fortunate to have Walton Firs within our District which we used for many, many camps, projects, even cross country runs, Remember "Firs Venture", a District camp. With an enduring knowlege of our climate, which all campers are aware, I remember how well drained the site is, not like many after rain that turn into a quagmire. I have been privilaged to see the "ghost of Walton Firs", a lady in a black dress decorated with large white flowers. A long siting as she walked to me, I thought it was a mum come to visit, she walked behind a tent and did not reappear. I have heard of many siting since, fortunatly she seems to be a friendly ghost. I am now president of 1st Hersham, doing more supporting than leading and was pleased to help the foundation at the Squires Garden Centre do. We realy must not lose this wonderful camp site.
